Minutes of the General Committee of The Centurion Lacrosse Club held at The Market Porter Public House, Stone Street, London SE1 on 6th September 2011.

Present: Peter Mundy (President), Ron Balls, John Maynard, Geoffrey Wilkinson, Steve Williams, Rob Collinge (Secretary).

APOLOGIES were received from Amit Biswas, Mick Chennel, Neil Forsyth, and Roger Okill. David Shuttleworth of the ELA also sent his apologies.

  1. MINUTES of the General Committee meeting held on 5th July 2011 were approved.

  2. MATTERS ARISING

    1. Eddie Owen was elected Chairman of the MPC unopposed.
    2. The DVD from the Yorkshire archive has not arrived.
    3. Targets for expansion. We currently have five new live projects, see below, and have a couple brewing.
    4. Denis Hanks has organised a new supply of ties.
  3. SECRETARY’S REPORT

    1. History of Lee LC. This has been distributed to members with e mail addresses and is now available on the website for downloading.
    2. Publicity materials have been provided to Northampton University.
  4. TREASURER’S REPORT

    There has been little change since the last meeting. Income to date is £4,828. Expenditure is £2,223. Currently the bank balance is £5,645.

  5. HOUSE OF LORD’S DINNER

    Lord Graham had indicated that as a result of illness that he might not be able to host the dinner. Peter Mundy agreed to explore the possibility of Baroness Williams hosting it. A date in early September was proposed.

  6. HANDBOOK

    Dave Slaughter had prepared this year’s Handbook. It only needs Northern fixtures, not yet published, to be complete. The intention is to post it on the website for members to access and down load as required. A third party service (Print on Demand) will provide printed copies to anyone who requires this service at a cost of around £5.00 including postage for individual copies, cheaper if ordered in bulk.

  7. DEVELOPMENT

    1. Rotherham LC. Claire Willis is forming a new club and requested support. Initially, it will be a ladies’ side but intending to develop mixed and men’s teams. The secretary is liaising with the ELA to see how the venture might be supported.
    2. Derby University. The Athletic Union has agreed to support lacrosse if there is sufficient support from a Fresher’s Day event. Neighbouring universities have agreed to play friendlies next year with a view to them entering BUCS the year after. The ELA are supporting the freshers event.
    3. Lincoln LC. Lincoln City LC is being formed from university BUCS and local players. It has been successful in fund raising and awaits the result of grant applications. It was agreed to support the venture once the level of need was clear.
    4. Lancaster University. Lancaster has run into some trouble. They have a kit shortage. Centurion Mike Orme who is managing the successful Sedburgh schools development is now coaching at the university. There are embryonic plans for a city lacrosse team. The university has £600 available for kit. It was decided to match the universities funds and to provide 10 sets of sticks, helmets, and gloves.
    5. Colchester Schools. Ben Parkes of the Colchester club is establishing lacrosse in his school the school has £200 available for the purchase of equipment. It was decided to provide 30 sticks at the additional cost to The Centurions.
    6. Chester University. UKLacrosse and Warrior were thanked for their support in purchasing kit for the university.
    7. ELA freshers programme. The secretary was asked to investigate the opportunity of attending ELA meetings relevant to university development.
  8. SETTLEBECK SCHOOL.

    The meeting noted with pleasure the progress in developing school lacrosse in Sedburgh.

  9. HISTORY OF ENGLISH LACROSSE.

    Tim Lowe, a retired Mellor player is seeking help with preparing the history. We have pointed several interested students in his direction.

    Geoffrey Wilkinson reported that he and Denis Hanks have inspected our archive. There is a need for office space to classify and sort the archive. Some of the archive may be of interest to Tim. The secretary was asked to investigate the opportunities for temporary office hire west of London.

  10. CENTURION AWARDS

    It was agreed that speeches at the annual dinner by awardees should very brief.

    Geoffrey Wilkinson will use the ELA email circulation list to facilitate his request for nominations.
